Armstrong flies to Rally Poland ERC Junior win

21 Jun 2021

Jon Armstrong claimed a debut win in M-Sport Poland’s Ford Fiesta Rally3 on the European Rally Championship's first round, Rally Poland. Armstrong and Phil Hall won ERC Junior by four and a half minutes, finishing 21st overall among more powerful Rally2 cars.

“We were pretty much on Ken’s [Torn] pace all weekend, it’s a shame he had his issue as it would have been a nice battle. We kept pushing hard to learn whether our driving and pacenotes were working. You have to be pushing to the limit to know needs to be improved."

The competitiveness of Armstrong was key for M-Sport Poland who was running the Rally3 Fiesta in the ERC for the first time. With the rally finishing in Poland’s capital city Warsaw, Armstrong’s win was a special moment for the whole team.

The result means Armstrong and Hall have now led both World and European Junior Championships this year after winning both openers. Engine damage cost them Junior WRC points in Portugal but Armstrong’s Polish pace is encouraging for Rally Estonia in July.

“The Rally3 car was a lot of fun, especially at low-speed corners where you can drive it a bit more like a Rally2 car. It’s a really good car all around and I’d love to do some more events in the future but let’s see.”

The Rally3 verdict

“The biggest thing to take away from Poland is that I am happy with my rally preparation. My pacenotes are good, we have definitely made big improvements there. I'm just thankful to those who supported me to do this rally and I hope they could enjoy the result as well.”

A valuable weekend
